No “Forklift Upgrade” Required
Light-based communication works with existing POS
In recent months the news has been filled with announcements by global financial institutions, mobile operators and even mobile handset manufacturers about emerging “wallet” technologies that promise consumers “tap and go” convenience. Problem is, these technologies require a huge infrastructure investment by retailers for new point-of-sale system hardware and software. This infrastructure change, however likely, will take time; the Aite Group (www.aitegroup.com) projects that by 2014 only 2.5% of US retailer locations will be prepared to accept contactless transactions using mobile devices.
Mobeam leverages existing barcode laser scanners – millions of which are in use in the US alone – as well as established barcode standards, including UPC, EAN, Code 128 and GS1 DataBar™. That means retailers don’t need to make any costly and disruptive changes to their POS infrastructures to begin accepting smartphone-based offers.
