A quick search of any mobile “app store” uncovers hundreds applications that purport to consolidate loyalty cards, offer digital coupons, and provide a “wallet” replacement. Unfortunately, these applications fail at point-of-sale – a laser scanner will not reliably and predictably “read” a barcode off a smartphone’s display. It’s no secret; even the app developers themselves concede on their web sites that the user needs to find just the right circumstances (screen brightness, angle at which the device is held, etc.) in order to successfully complete a scan. What’s left is a sentiment often expressed in consumer reviews: “Great idea. Too bad it doesn’t work”.
